Semakula George is one of the easy going kids at Rising Star and is always telling jokes.
He studies at Gayaza Church of Uganda Secondary School in senior two on a half scholarship. Since the father abandoned the family, George has to work at odd jobs to pay the rest of his fees and other school dues. These odd jobs may be fetching water, working as unskilled labor at building sites, and at carpentry workshops among others things.
The main issues that the family faces is lack of a more substantial income to take care of their needs like clothing, school fees, better housing and feeding. The family takes two meals a day, a very late breakfast and an equally late supper so as to offset the lack. His mother fries chips and sausages by the roadside so as to take care of the boys.
George loves animals and he cares for some poultry at home though lately his birds got the flu and most of them died. He helps his mother out with cooking and fetching the water which they get from a nearby tank.
George enjoys his football and has been one of the most promising boys in Gayaza. He has been with us for almost a year now and he says it was because of the way Rising Star took care of players that most drew him to us.
Due to Rising Star being around, he says “I have developed greatly as a soccer player, an individual as well as academically in the short time I have been here.”
